New Supportive Housing Project Targets Young Population

In October 2010, twenty- two young women aging out of Cuyahoga County’s foster care system will have a new place to call home. Known as Independence Place, this permanent supportive housing project is a collaboration between CHN and the YWCA’s Nurturing Independence & Aspirations program (NIA).
Once a teenager reaches age 18 and is no longer attending high school, they are released from the foster care system. Suddenly on their own, these young adults face the harsh reality of what it means to be independent. With no support or tools to find a job or secure housing, more than 25% experience homelessness within 2-4 years.
The YWCA’s NIA program focuses on five distinct areas to address the unique challenges faced by young women aging out of foster care: GED, Life Skills, Nurturing Parenting, Job Readiness and Independent Living Skills.
CHN will redevelop existing space at the YWCA’s headquarters on Prospect Avenue, providing 22 efficiency apartments for young women aging out of foster care. The YWCA will own and operate the apartments, offering existing program services. On-site child care and a GED program through Cuyahoga Community College will provide the skills these young women need to become completely self-sufficient, independent and successful.
