COMMERCE DEPARTMENT ANNOUNCES GRANT AWARD TO THE CLEVELAND HOUSING NETWORK

Program will use Computer Technology to Build Capacity of Local Non-Profits.

The U.S. Department of Commerce has announced funding awards to assist a select group of 43 organizations across the country use computer technology to advance their missions, including the Cleveland Housing Network (CHN), a local non-profit organization dedicated to affordable housing and community development throughout Cleveland's neighborhoods. Through its Telecommunications and Information Infrastructure Assistance program (TIIAP), the Department of Commerce has awarded grants totaling $17.6 million to innovative projects that demonstrate the benefits of telecommunications and Information technology and help to extend their reach to underserved communities and populations.

Through its Technology Link 2000 (T2K) project, CHN has received a highly competitive $525,000 award from the Department of Commerce over a three year period to assist in building a citywide Internet platform that will link Cleveland's community development industry with social service providers, the public sector, and Cleveland residents. "The T2K project has captured the hearts and minds of our industry and promises to be the single most important capacity building tool to advance the goals of Cleveland's nationally recognized community development initiatives" said Rob Curry, CHN's Executive Director.

The project will use Internet-based technology to enable community based organizations to share data resources and collaborate on solutions to advance the goals of community revitalization in Cleveland. "The Cleveland Housing Network and its community partnerships recognize the value of telecommunications and information technology as effective tools for community development, collaborative business development, and a better quality of life for those working toward self-sufficiency. This grant will help CHN and its varied community partnerships ensure more Cleveland area residents have the opportunity to access the Information Age and realize the economic and social benefits of advanced technology", said United States Senator Mike DeWine.
