Opportunity Homes Pilot Effort Shows Promise

Opportunity Homes, a collaborative effort to address the foreclosure crisis in six Cleveland neighborhoods, is showing promising results in its early stages of development—two homes have sold, and 11 homes which are still under construction already have signed sales options.

Opportunity Homes is an effort of Neighborhood Progress Inc. (NPI), CHN and six CDCs to redevelop 300 homes, demolish 300 unsalvageable homes and help 300 families avoid foreclosure. The goal is to protect $950 million in existing and anticipated investment in Cleveland’s Strategic Investment Initiative areas over the next 10 years.

CHN’s role in the neighborhood stabilization plan is to redevelop vacant, foreclosed homes into green, energy efficient and affordable homes. These homes are being sold to qualified buyers at affordable prices, with subsidies available for those who qualify. To date, 32 properties have been acquired for redevelopment and 52 unsalvageable properties have been demolished.

The CDCs in this three-year pilot include Slavic Village, Buckeye/Shaker, Fairfax, Glenville, Tremont and Detroit Shoreway. Click here to view homes for sale.
